When you hear the word “trauma”, your mind probably jumps to the unimaginable: disasters, tragedies, or life-changing moments that permanently affect a person’s outlook and trajectory. These forms of trauma can certainly impact people for years to come, but the term “trauma” can also be used to describe experiences and situations that are not as easily identifiable. While the previously mentioned events can be referred to as “acute”, “isolated”, or “single-incident” trauma, there is also a category of trauma called “complex” trauma.
Complex trauma results from extended exposure to traumatic events, often occurring within relationships and typically during critical developmental periods. Unlike a single traumatic incident, complex trauma involves a series of prolonged or chronic stressors that can be interpersonal, cumulative, and difficult to escape. This type of trauma is often associated with situations such as abuse, neglect, or exposure to multiple traumatic events over an extended period.
Both acute and complex trauma can lead to a range of psychological and emotional difficulties, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), borderline personality disorder (BPD), dissociation, difficulties in emotional regulation, and challenges in forming and maintaining relationships. Recognizing and understanding acute and complex trauma is essential to identifying the right kind of therapy to help trauma survivors in their healing process.
Trauma of any kind can affect the mind and body profoundly. Survivors of trauma often experience intrusive thoughts or memories, relational struggles, mood swings, difficulty navigating intense emotions, chronic pain and health concerns, dissociation (significant detachment from the present moment), and addiction to self-destructive behaviors. These are all manifestations of the mind and body trying to make sense of events that no person should have to experience, and can deeply affect a trauma survivor’s ability to live a normal life.
Fortunately, there is a wide variety of therapeutic approaches that can help survivors of trauma restore or discover a way of life that feels peaceful, joyful, and safe. At Resonate Counseling, survivors are supported with treatment plans that incorporate various effective trauma treatment techniques and are constantly met with honor, respect, and compassion.
