Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based subtype of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) designed to help people build skills for managing intense emotions. DBT suggests that much of clients’ struggles to rein in emotion stem from a person’s natural emotional sensitivity being met with an consistently unsupportive or invalidating environment. If you struggle with mood swings and behavior linked to intense emotions, DBT may be helpful for you.
DBT gives clients the skills and tools to observe and describe their emotions, regulate their responses, and channel them in healthier ways. DBT helps clients increase their mindfulness, control their emotional responses, navigate and endure distress in their lives, and engage more effectively in interpersonal relationships.
At Resonate Counseling, I integrate DBT principles into a personalized therapeutic experience. It is important to note that although I incorporate DBT skills and principles heavily into my work with clients, I do not offer full-protocol DBT, complete with every element espoused by the creator of the modality. (If you’re looking for full-protocol DBT, please reach out! I’d love to refer you to colleagues in the area.) Instead, I apply the principles and skills taught in DBT generously, yet more flexibly (referred to as DBT-informed therapy). I believe that DBT-informed care can be great for some clients, and full-protocol DBT can be best for others.
If you’re interested in receiving DBT-informed care in Orlando or online in Florida, please reach out here. If you’re not sure what form of DBT might be a good fit, please give me a call at 407-205-2074; I’d be happy to help you consider whether working with me might be right for you.
